Cycling centre being built in Waikato

Construction of the National Cycling Centre of Excellence near Cambridge in Waikato has begun.

The $28 million facility will rival the country's only indoor velodrome in Invercargill, where the Olympic track cycling team trained in the lead-up to the London Games.

The new centre will be completed by the end of next year and, training across all four Olympic cycling disciplines will shift to Cambridge.

Centre chief executive, Geoff Balme, says it will help to fix a fragmented cycling culture, where people are training in different parts of the country.

The Olympic cycling team has won two bronze medals at the London Games.
