A toxic shellfish warning has been renewed for the Coromandel and Bay of Plenty coastlines from Tairua to Bowentown Heads.

Testing has found high levels of paralytic shellfish poison, and people are warned not to collect or eat any sea urchins or bivalve shellfish such as mussels, oysters and scallops.

Paua, crayfish and crabs are safe to eat so long as the gut is removed before cooking.

Waikato DHB says anyone who feels sick after eating shellfish should seek medical help immediately.

Symptoms can include numbness, dizziness and tingling, and in extreme cases respiratory failure and paralysis.
