Police in Wanganui have charged a man with the theft of a work by New Zealand artist Colin McCahon.
The 1966 Brass Cross was one of two prototypes connected with The Way of the Cross painting.
It had been gifted to a family in Wanganui and was discovered to be missing last year following the death of the owner.
Police inquiries revealed it had been on-sold through Dunbar Sloane Limited in 2005.
A man, 60, will appear in Wanganui District Court in December charged with theft.
