Two people have been taken to hospital after being rescued from a vehicle that rolled into a pond near Hokitika where at least one other person is believed to be trapped.

Police say the driver of the four-wheel drive managed to escape after the vehicle landed in the pond at a goldmining site in Ruatapu.

Police say the man ran several kilometres to raise the alarm at 7pm on Sunday.

They say a young girl has been pulled from the vehicle in a serious condition and suffering from hypothermia, and has been taken by helicopter to Grey Base Hospital.

An adult male has also been treated for injuries and has been taken to hospital.

St John Ambulance said on Sunday night that it understood a third person was still unaccounted for.
