Taxi driver fined for refusing to drive short distance

An Auckland taxi driver has been fined $1000 for twice refusing a fare because the journey was too short.

The Transport Agency says the driver would not take two men from Federal St to Karangahape Rd, telling them it was a four-minute walk.

They rang the driver's company who advised them to get back into his taxi.

When he again refused their fare, they found another taxi and made a formal complaint to the Transport Agency.

The agency says everyone should have confidence they can hire a taxi to their destination, irrespective of the journey's length.
