A woman has been charged with the assault of a Hamilton woman, who is now missing.

Rae Portman, 33, who is also known as Bok, has not been seen since she checked into a motel in the Auckland suburb of Mt Albert on 20 June.

She checked out of the motel the next day, but left her belongings there.

Detective Inspector Mark Gutrysays during their investigations they learnt Ms Portman was assaulted 12 days before she disappeared.

He says Ms Portman was not seriously injured, and at this stage police do not believe the assault had anything to do with her disappearance.

A 30-year-old woman will appear in the Manukau District Court on Monday.

Police have been speaking to people who saw Ms Portman in Auckland, and making contact with her drug associates.

He says Ms Portman's appearance is unusual, and that police hold grave concerns for her safety.

He says police are keeping all possibilities on what happened to her open.
