A woman has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after a pedestrian was struck by a car in Nelson.

The man's leg was severed after he was struck on Wakefield Quay and pinned against a pole just after 7.30am on Wednesday.

Police allege that the woman drove her car into the 40-year-old man, whom they say is her uncle.

The 26-year-old left the scene before officers arrived, but later turned up at the police station.

She appeared in the Nelson District Court on Wednesday afternoon and was remanded in custody until 7 September. Her name has been suppressed.

The man was having surgery at Nelson Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.
