Golfers targeted in scam

Police are investigating a scam targeting golfers throughout New Zealand involving credit cards being charged twice and goods not being delivered.

It is believed the scam began in 2010. Police say the New Zealand Golf Gazette, now in receivership, was used to target golfers in Canterbury, Nelson, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty, Waikato and Auckland.

Detective Simon Eckersley says people ordered goods through the magazine, but it appears they did not arrive or were charged for twice on credit cards.

Mr Eckersley says they are looking for a specific suspect, but the investigation is in its early stages. He believes at least 100 people are affected, but could end up being significantly more.

The Waihi Golf Club in Waikato says about 10 members have been affected.

Manager Gary Dunning says one member, whose complaint started the investigation, paid for a trip to an Australian golf course and later discovered that he had been charged again for the trip.

Police say about 40 new people have come forward with complaints after publicity on Wednesday morning.
