Roading consultation costs

8:00 am on 17 August 2012

The Transport Agency has spent $8.4 million on public relations and consultation for the Government's roads of national significance projects.

Some $3 million has gone on the Wellington northern corridor project, a four-lane expressway from Wellington airport to Otaki.

Most of the rest was spent on the Puhoi - Wellsford route, the Waikato expressway, and the western ring route and Victoria Park tunnel projects in Auckland.

Labour says it's an outrageous sum.

The Save Kapiti group says a propaganda campaign is being waged and the Smart Transport Network group says the Transport Agency is trying to spend its way to a good public-relations result.

But the agency and Government say the spending is approriate, as people have to be informed.

More about the development of the roads of national significance can be heard on Insight on Sunday.
