NZ republic inevitable, says Key

Prime Minister John Key says it is inevitable New Zealand will one day become a republic, but this is unlikely under his Government.

Mr Key was speaking from London, where he met Mayor Boris Johnson, the Queen, and Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

Reporters questioned him about a range of issues, including his plan to get New Zealand through the economic crisis, and indigenous affairs.

When asked for his views on New Zealand becoming a republic, Mr Key said he is sure it will happen one day, but it is unlikely to be under his leadership.

Mr Key says New Zealand still has domestic issues to address, such as Treaty settlements and the relationship between the Crown and Maori.
