A man has been fined for trying to bring unauthorised plant seeds into New Zealand on a flight from Hong Kong.

Kwan Sang Cheng, 58, from China told quarantine inspectors he was going to plant them in a relative's garden.

He stated on a passenger arrival card at Auckland international airport on 1 July that he had no plant material. However, a search revealed the seeds in his jacket.

He was convicted and fined $2500 at Manukau District Court last week.
