Plan to halve production at major newsprint mill

The newsprint maker Norske Skog Tasman is proposing to halve production at its Kawerau mill, though no job losses have been confirmed at this stage.

General manager Peter McCarty says management is meeting the 290-strong workforce to discuss the plan.

The company blames general economic conditions and greater competition from electronic media for a fall in newsprint demand.

Established in the early 1950s, the Kawerau mill was for years a huge employer in eastern Bay of Plenty.
