Nearly half of the publications banned by Chief Censor's office in the year to June involved the sexual exploitation of children and were off the internet.

About 300 publications, including films, books, DVDs and material off the internet were banned.

Chief Censor Bill Hastings says the figures are on a par with the previous year.

He says the majority of the material on the web originates overseas.
