News promotion breaches broadcasting standards

The Broadcasting Standards Authority says Television New Zealand breached rules protecting children's interests with a news promotion.

The promotion featured an injured woman in front of a burning building during the recent war in Georgia.

It was broadcast at 5pm, during coverage of the Beijing Olympic Games.

The authority says the news promotion was graphic and disturbing and would have alarmed child viewers.

But it did not imposing a penalty, saying the finding itself would serve as a warning to people producing news promotions to use discretion.
