Counties Manukau police have arrested a woman in connection with a fake residence visa scam that targeted Tongan overstayers.
The arrest followed twopublic meetings called by Tongan lawyers to encourage victims to go to the police.
Detective Sergeant Ross Ellwood said a woman is charged with obtaining by deception and more charges will be laid once police have finished taking statements.
More than 50 complaints have been made so far, mostly from Auckland though some from as far away as Levin and Wellington.
Lawyer Nelson Tupou says hundreds of overstayers were caught by the scam but most are too scared to go to the police.
