Urewera pair denied bail

10:14 pm on 28 August 2012

Two men sentenced to prison for firearms offences in Te Urewera National Park in 2007 have been denied bail.

Tame Iti and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara were both sentenced for 2½ years in May, following a jury trial in the High Court in Auckland.

Both are appealing against their convictions and sentences.

In a judgement released on Tuesday, the Court of Appeal ruled they will remain in prison, as they have not met the high threshold which applies to those seeking bail pending an appeal.

It is the second time that Iti and Kemara have been denied bail.
