A body believed to be that of a Polynesian teenager has been discovered on the banks of the Hutt River, near Wellington.
Police say the body was found by a member of the public near a riverside carpark just before 8am on Wednesday.
Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thornton says police are treating the death as unexplained.
The teenager has yet to be identified and results of a post-mortem are expected to be available on Thursday.
