Worker dismissed over Waihi mine fire

5:09 pm on 29 August 2012

Newmont Waihi Gold says a mine worker has been fired for not following emergency procedures during an underground truck fire at the company's mine in Waihi.

Smoke from a truck which caught fire 100 metres into the Trio Gold Mine forced 28 miners into refuge centres before they could return to the surface in July.

A report released on Wednesday details what happened and identifies what was done about it.

A review of staff actions during the emergency was also conducted, which resulted in a disciplinary hearing for one staff member who, it was decided, did not follow protocol and was later dismissed.
