10:07 pm on 3 December 2008

More heavy rain and high winds are predicted for many parts of the South Island.

A heavy rain warning has been issued for Fiordland where up to 70 millimeters of rain is forecast from Thursday morning.

Up to 300mm of rain is forecast for the area near the Westland ranges from midnight on Wednesday.

MetService says the rain is expected to swell the main lakes and rivers in Otago and Canterbury, and cause slips and washouts.

It warns driving will be hazardous and people in these areas should watch for rapidly rising streams and rivers.

Damaging winds of up to 120km/h are also forecast for inland Canterbury and Marlborough from early on Thursday morning.

MetService says the winds may damage trees, powerlines and insecure roofs.
