Aerial watch on motorists this summer

11:14 am on 4 December 2008

Police are to use planes to track misbehaving motorists over the summer holidays.

The operation will cover Waikato, Bay of Plenty and the central North Island.

Waikato road policing manager, Inspector Leo Tooman, says police have greater vision from the air and can see vehicles which overtake in no-pass lane areas.

He says the national road toll is currently 63 lower than last year and the police hope the aerial patrols will carry on this momentum.
