'Dangerous' man escapes from police room

6:00 am on 5 December 2008

Police in Auckland are hunting a man they describe as dangerous after he escaped from one of their own interview rooms.

Tuainekore Charlie Rangi, 30, left the unlocked room at the Glen Innes station about 11am on Thursday, after what police describe as a moment of lapsed supervision.

He was waiting to appear in court on burglary and vehicle charges.

Detective Senior Sergeant Mark McHattie says he is dangerous and should not be approached. He has a scar on his right cheek and a snake tattoo on his arm.

An investigation is under way into the circumstances which led to his escape.
