A large mahogany statue taken from a Wellington chapel 12 years ago has been recovered in Taranaki.
The statue of Christ on the Cross was taken from the Futuna Chapel in Karori.
It was found an unoccupied rural property in Ahititi, northern Taranaki.
Friends of Futuna Charitable Trust chairman Nick Bevin says he never gave up hope it would be found.
He says it will be given an appropriate welcome home ceremony.
Mr Bevin says it is possible the 1.6 metre statue has not been well looked after and it will be cleansed and rededicated to the chapel.
He says the sculptor who made it, Jim Allen, is delighted it has been found.
