Kauri dieback may have spread to Waikato

Waikato Regional Council is warning people to steer clear of two kauri trees it is testing for the fungal disease kauri dieback.

The trees, at Woodstock Primary School in Fairfield, were cordoned off on Friday after a member of the public spotted symptoms of the disease.

Kauri dieback, which can kill a tree by infecting it through its roots, has so far been confined to Auckland and Northland.

The council says test results are expected to take six weeks and steps have been taken to prevent the disease spreading.

People can help by staying on formed tracks in areas where there are kauri.

The two trees were planted at the school about 40 years ago.
