Aircraft back in service following emergency alert

An Air New Zealand plane that transmitted an emergency code during a flight on Saturday is now back in normal service.

The Boeing 777, which was travelling from Auckland to Heathrow, via Los Angeles, began transmitting the code 7700, which means an emergency, as it was nearing Heathrow Airport.

Air New Zealand says no emergency was declared and the plane, with 330 passengers on board, landed following a minor engineering issue causing a loss of hydraulic pressure.

The airline says the captain requested priority to land as a precaution only.

Engineers have checked the aircraft and identified a minor hydraulic leak which has been resolved.
