Nicholson wins Burghley for third time

8:29 am on 3 September 2012

Andrew Nicholson of New Zealand and his horse Avebury won the Burghley horse trial in England on Sunday for the third time.

Nicholson, 51, last won the event 12 years ago.

They dropped only one rail in the showjumping section to win by 2.5 penalty points ahead of Sinead Halpin of the United States who dropped three rails.

Nicholson, who won an Olympic bronze medal last month, says Burghley is his favourite event to ride at and Avebury is a joy to ride.

Nicholson also came 13th on his second horse. Jonathan Paget was fifth and Mark Todd 12th.

First prize is worth £50,000.
