Waikato police have contacted Interpol in an effort to locate relatives of a woman killed in a vehicle crash.

The 20-year-old woman died on Friday after the car she was in drove into the rear of a trailer being towed by a truck on State Highway 27 at Patetonga.

Police say that before the woman's name can be released, close relatives must be notified.

They say the woman has relatives in many countries.

Police are working with Interpol and other family members to do let them know as quickly as possible.

The driver of the car had to be cut out of the vehicle by fire fighters and was taken to Waikato Hospital with minor injuries.
