The museum in Dunedin announced on Monday it will relaunch in early December this year after being closed for two-and-a-half years for a $39 million redevelopment.

The floor space has doubled, with bigger new galleries for displays.

The settler portrait gallery has been remodelled with interactive digital screens revealing background information on each person depicted.

Director Linda Wigley says the museum has been looking internationally for the best ways of interpreting its large social history collections and the new technology will make it the most modern and innovative in New Zealand.
