A male tramper in Canterbury has died after falling into a river at Arthur's Pass National Park.

Police say the man was attempting to cross the Waimakariri River near Klondyke Corner with two other people on Saturday when he stumbled and fell into the water.

They say he was swept downstream for some distance before being pulled out by his fellow trampers.

Police say he was part of a tramping group who had just started out on their overnight tramp in the area.
