Support for taxi driver's family as murder charges laid

5:00 pm on 9 December 2008

The Christchurch community rallied around the family of the taxi driver Abdulrahman Ikhtiari on Tuesday, as two youths were charged with his murder.

Mr Ikhtiari, 39, died from a single stab wound to his chest early on Saturday.

Police revealed on Tuesday they believe they have found the knife sought in connection with his death.

A 16-year-old appeared in the Youth Court and was remanded in custody without plea until 23 December.

At Christchurch District Court, a 19-year-old man was remanded in custody to the same date and granted interim name suppression.

Outside court, members of the Afghan community said they had applied to the Immigration Service for either Mr Ikhtiari's brother or mother to come out from Afghanistan and look after his wife and young children.

A trust set up to help the family financially is already receiving donations.

Earlier, Detective Senior Sergeant Mike Johnson said information from the public led to the arrests.

Mr Johnson said police have yet to find the weapon used in the attack and would like to hear from anyone who was in the Worcester Street area at the time.
