Landing gear light failure sparks alert

11:15 am on 5 September 2012

A pilot of a Boeing 767 approaching Auckland international airport raised the alarm after a cockpit light failed to come on when the landing gear should have been in place.

The Air New Zealand flight NZ9 from Honolulu landed without incident on Wednesday morning, although fire crews were on standby.

The light, which would normally confirm the landing gear was in place, failed to come on during the approach phase.

The captain alerted air traffic control and a visual check and other on board systems confirmed the landing gear was in place.
