Controversial museum head resigns

The chief executive of Otago Museum who was revealed to be earning more than the head of Te Papa has resigned.

Shimrath Paul has worked at the museum for 22 years and leaves to head a cancer organisation based in Jakarta.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that his 2011 salary package of more than $310,000 was higher than the head of the national museum Te Papa.

The revelation led to calls for the Dunedin City Council to cut his salary, which the council said was not possible because under the Otago Museum Trust Board Act the museum was fully independent.

Otago Museum Trust Board chair Graham Crombie says Mr Paul will not receive a payout as a result of his resignation.
