Charges over policeman cycle death

A truck driver has been charged with careless driving causing death following the death of a senior police officer as he cycled home from work in June.

Superintendent Steve Fitzgerald was killed in a collision with a truck on The Esplanade in Petone, near Wellington.

A 45-year-old truck driver will appear in the Lower Hutt District Court in January to face a charge of careless driving causing death.

Steve Fitzgerald , 57, was the national commander of the police communication centres and had previously been the national road policing manager.
