SFO asked to extend investigation

4:37 pm on 10 September 2012

The head of Ngati Whatua o Kaipara has asked the Serious Fraud Office to extend its current investigation into Wellington Tenths Trust to include the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust.

The latter was set up in 2008 to administer a Treaty settlement package for Taranaki Whanui, a grouping of four iwi.

Ngati Whatua o Kaipara chief executive Jason Fox, who's also a lawyer, says the delegates of the Port Nicholson Block Settlement Trust met in Wellington during the weekend.

He asked the meeting to back the request to the SFO, because of transactions relating to the trust's Shelley Bay property.

But Mr Fox says that motion was blocked, so he personally wrote to the SFO on Sunday with that request.

However, delegates backed a motion to create a new commercial board structure.
