The Wellington City Council is more than doubling its contribution towards the construction of a national war memorial park.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown told Parliament's Transport and Industrial Relations committee on Monday that ratepayers would contribute $5 million towards the park, up from $2 million originally proposed.

The park will incorporate the existing National War Memorial and the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior and is being fast-tracked by the Government to be completed in time for the centenary of the Gallipoli landings in 2015 at a cost of more than $80 million.

Ms Wade-Brown said the council is committed to maintaining the park.
