Home detention for doctor who made false claims

8:28 pm on 10 December 2008

A Christchurch doctor who made false medical claims worth thousands of dollars has been sentenced to home detention.

Jaques Renard Marchand admitted making more than $30,000 in fictitious claims for General Medical Services to the GP group Pegasus Health.

Marchand originally faced 82 charges alleging that he made false claims between 2001 and 2004, but those were amended to four representative fraud charges.

He has since paid the money back, and expressed remorse for the offending.

Judge Colin Doherty sentenced Marchand to eight months' home detention and refused an application for continued name suppression.
