Tuhoe aims for control of services

Tuhoe chief negotiator Tamati Kruger says the iwi hopes its settlement will eventually enable it to manage its own affairs, including government services.

The iwi has accepted the Crown's offer settling its historical claim in a deal worth $170 million.

The offer includes an acknowledgment of mana motuhake, or the ability of Ngai Tuhoe to take control of its own affairs.

Mr Kruger said the Crown and Tuhoe have agreed the movement towards mana motuhake is a 40-year programme.
