Gang leader forfeits assets to police

A Black Power gang leader has had to forfeit more than $38,000 in cash and 11 vehicles to police following a judgement made under the Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act at the Rotorua High Court.

The assets were seized between March 2010 and July 2011 from Tai Rewita, a leading Black Power member from Tauranga.

Earlier in September, a judgement against Rewita revealed that, on the balance of probabilities, he had benefited from criminal activity involving the sale of methamphetamine.

Detective Inspector Tim Anderson said the judgement is significant because it was made despite Rewita being acquitted on drug charges.
