Case of missing Wellington typist officially closed

The case of a teenager who disappeared 47 years ago has been officially closed.

Wellington typist Wendy Mayes, then aged 16, disappeared in September 1961 after meeting John Maltby about modelling work.

It is widely believed Mr Maltby murdered Miss Mayes the night she disappeared, but no trace of her has ever been found.

Mr Maltby was not charged, but his body was found washed up on the beach at Island Bay a week after Miss Mayes went missing.

Wellington Coroner Garry Evans held an inquest on Thursday into the case at the request of a private investigator who acted as an agent for Miss Mayes' family.

Mr Evans found Miss Mayes died at the hands of one other person, but ruled there is not enough evidence to show who was responsible.
