Auckland's Middlemore Hospital has overhauled security in its birthing unit after a baby was kidnapped - although it insists its precautions at the time were good enough.
Neha Narayan admitted snatching the two-day-old girl in January when she appeared in the Auckland High Court on Friday.
Middlemore Hospital says Narayan sneaked into the birthing unit behind an authorised visitor and was looking after the baby with her mother's consent when she took her.
The 25-year-old was caught with the infant in the hospital's carpark by a nurse and the parents.
The hospital maintains its security was up to scratch, but has since changed the position of surveillance cameras and tightened door security.
It also now requires parents and babies to be signed out of the ward if they are going anywhere.
Middlemore says staff have not been disciplined because they noticed what had happened and stopped Narayan leaving the hospital grounds.
The woman will be sentenced in October.
