Missing climber in fall on Mt Cook

8:41 am on 13 December 2008

A climber is safe on Aoraki Mount Cook but his brother has not been seen since falling from view on Thursday.

The man disappeared as they tried to return to their hut.

The other was picked up about 6am on Saturday. He has no injuries.

An alpine rescue team continues to search for his brother.

The two men were flown to the Plateau Hut last Saturday and set out to climb Aoraki Mount Cook via the Zurbriggens route at 1am on Wednesday.

Police say the Australian pair bivvyed high on Zurbriggens ridge on Wednesday night, but decided to return to Plateau Hut on Thursday due to the weather conditions.

Soon after setting off, one fell and disappeared from view.

The weather has been unsettled since Wednesday and police say there is between 25 - 30cm of new snow at Plateau Hut.

A Japanese climber was rescued on the mountain on 5 December after being trapped for a week by bad weather. His guide died of exposure.
