Retailers urge more police patrols after Kapiti death

3:27 pm on 16 September 2012

Retailers want more police patrols in Kapiti, north of Wellington, following a second violent death in just over a month.

Police have charged a man with the murder of Sean Strongman-Lintern, 20, who died outside a bar in the Kapiti Lights shopping complex early on Saturday morning.

A 17-year-old died five weeks ago, after he was found unconscious in the carpark of the nearby Coastlands shopping mall.

Several retailers in the area say the area is a known trouble spot and many people are now refusing to visit it at night.

Other retailers say people have felt intimidated by groups of up to ten young people on Friday and Saturday nights.

Several shop owners, who did not want to be named, told Radio New Zealand that people are intimidated by groups of young people drinking in the area.

Police say they actively patrol the area.
