Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister Christopher Finlayson is welcoming the merger of the national opera company New Zealand Opera and the Christchurch-based Southern Opera.
Under the name New Zealand Opera the new company will have bases in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.
Mr Finlayson says the merger ensures New Zealand Opera's place alongside the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Ballet as a genuine national performing arts institution.
