Storm hits Christchurch

10:43 pm on 17 September 2012

Wild weather has swept through Christchurch, blowing over trees and halting demolition work.

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority says the strong winds on Monday afternoon stopped demolition of the central city Clarendon Towers, which had high cranes operating and workers on the top floor.

Police say a tree was blown on to powerlines in the suburb of Yaldhurst and another uprooted in the central city.
