Group confident Wilson plan will work

A community safety group is working with the Department of Corrections and police to reassure the Wanganui community it will be protected from serial sex offender Stewart Murray Wilson.

Wilson, who lives on Wanganui Prison grounds, is considered at high-risk of reoffending and has been banned from 19 council-owned recreational areas.

Wanganui District Council has set up the group, made up of representatives from different agencies.

Councillor Philippa Baker-Hogan says the group has had a robust discussion with police and Corrections staff about the strict release plan put in place for Wilson.

She says police won't be responding to trespass notices banning Wilson from parks and recreational spaces because it may not be legal.

Despite that, Ms Baker-Hogan says, the group is confident the Corrections plan will work.
