Tribal leaders back Key Treaty suggestion

9:44 pm on 15 December 2008

Maori tribal leaders support a suggestion by Prime Minister John Key that the Office of Treaty Settlements could become part of the Prime Minister's Office.

Mr Key made the suggestion at a hui with Maori leaders on the shores of Lake Taupo on Sunday.

A spokesperson for the iwi groups, Ngatata Love, said it would be a positive move.

Dr Love said the fact there was a time frame for settlements meant it would make sense for Treaty settlements to be part of the Prime Minister's Office.
