A man charged with murder by driving his car into two other vehicles has been committed for trial in the High Court at Auckland after a depositions hearing in Manukau District Court on Monday.

Tony Worrell, 49, is charged with murder and attempted murder after the incident, in which a woman was killed and a man was seriously injured.

Katy Jean Powles, 26, was killed when Mr Worrell's car struck her in Karaka on 3 June.

Mr Worrell pleaded not guilty to a total of 10 charges.

His estranged wife, Lynette Worrell, was the only witness called to give evidence at the hearing.

She told the court Mr Worrell was heavily intoxicated when he left their home in Swanson that day.

He also suffers from type 1 diabetes and is on medication for depression.

Defence lawyer Matthew Goodman said the charges against his client were too severe.
