The parents of a US woman injured in a car crash in Waikato that killed her husband have thanked New Zealanders for their help and support.

Kirsten Steinke and her husband Kallan Stithem, 31, were in New Zealand on their honeymoon when their car crashed near Waitomo Caves on 20 September.

Mr Stithem died in the collision and Ms Steinke, 28, remains in critical condition in Waikato Hospital.

In a statement, the parents of the pair thanked all those who responded so quickly at the scene of the crash and those who have helped since.

They also thanked New Zealanders for their offers of assistance, saying the enormous generosity from so many people had touched their hearts.

The parents, both from Denver Colorado, arrived in New Zealand on Saturday.
