Officials to look into security measures for taxi drivers

4:36 pm on 17 December 2008

Transport Minister Steven Joyce has asked officials to look into how many taxi drivers have installed safety screens or cameras in their vehicles.

Mr Joyce met representatives of the Taxi Federation on Tuesday night after taxi driver Abdulrahman Ikhtiari was killed in Christchurch earlier this month.

Mr Joyce says safety screens, security cameras and distress buttons are allowed to be installed in taxis, but he says estimates indicate that their use has been variable.

He says he hopes to hear back from officials in the new year about what options there are to encourage taxi drivers to use security measures.
