Activist complains of unfair treatment by Customs

5:44 pm on 18 December 2008

An Auckland activist is demanding an explanation for the way she says she was treated by Customs officials after returning from an overseas rally.

Annalucia Vermunt says she was strip-searched, harassed and interrogated for more than four hours in November without good reason.

Ms Vermunt was returning from World Federation of Democratic Youth conference in Sydney when she claims customs officials in New Zealand strip-searched her for illegal drugs, then questioned her about her political affiliations and personal details.

She is asking Customs Minister Maurice Williamson to explain why she was targetted.

Ms Vermunt says she has no criminal convictions, but thinks she might be on some kind of "watch list" as a result of knowing Christchurch man Rob Gilchrist.

It has come to light this week that Mr Gilchrist spied on and passed on information about people involved in activist organisations to counter-terrorism police.

Customs says it is investigating the incident and is making no further comment.
