A 41-year-old inmate at Hawke's Bay Regional Prison has been charged with injuring with intent to injure after a prison officer was assaulted at the jail on Monday.
Police have finished speaking with the victim and witnesses and have completed a scene examination at the prison.
The inmate will appear in the Hastings District Court next week.
The guard suffered bruising and swelling to the head and face in the attack and was treated in hospital.
